The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, arrived in Iran as part of his tour of regional countries to find political solutions to end the ongoing human tragedy caused by the Saudi-led war on the Arabian Peninsula country.

Cheikh Ahmed has arrived in Tehran at the official invitation of senior Iranian officials, the Lebanese Arabic-language Al Mayadeen TV reported on Saturday.

The UN official is planned to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif later today, according to the report.

Earlier this week, the special envoy had paid a visit to Saudi Arabia, according to local media reports. He held talks with fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi in Riyadh on Wednesday.

Prior to Riyadh, Cheikh Ahmed was in Oman and Jordan.

The developments came as Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for more than two years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been launching deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 12,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
