Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday that what was agreed between Fatah and Hamas on Thursday in Cairo under Egyptian auspices would strengthen and accelerate the steps to end the Palestinian division.

Abbas, who welcomed the agreement signed between the two movements, said in a statement to Xinhua that he thanked his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for the great role played by Egypt in achieving this important achievement.

Abbas issued his directives, according to the statement, to the Palestinian reconciliation government and all the organs and institutions to work hard to implement what was agreed upon, calling on all forces and factions to make every effort to achieve what the Palestinian people aspire to restore unity.

Fatah and Hamas signed an accord for Palestinian reconciliation after a two-day round of Egyptian-sponsored talks.

The agreement was signed by  Fatah movement official, Fateh Azzam al-Ahmad, and Hamas deputy head of the political bureau Saleh al-Arouri in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

Fatah and Hamas delegations have held talks since Tuesday in the presence of officials from the Egyptian intelligence service to discuss ending the internal Palestinian division that has been going on for 10 years. Officials of the two movements announced that the talks were “in a positive atmosphere.”

This is the first round of talks between the two movements since they held similar meetings in the Qatari capital of Doha in June 2016 without a serious breakthrough to achieve reconciliation between them.

The Cairo dialogues for reconciliation came a week after the arrival of the delegation of the Palestinian reconciliation government headed by Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah to the Gaza Strip and held a ministerial meeting and the receipt of the headquarters of his ministries.

The development of the file of Palestinian reconciliation came after Hamas announced on 17 of last month from Cairo the dissolution of its administrative committee in the Gaza Strip and its invitation to the government of reconciliation, which was formed in 2014 to take over its functions in the sector and to approve the holding of general elections.
