Head of Hamas’ political bureau Ismail Haniyeh, on Thursday evening, phoned Egypt’s General Intelligence Director, Major General Khaled Fawzi.
Head of Hamas’ political bureau expressed “appreciation of the role of the Egyptian leadership, people, and the pivotal role of the General Intelligence Service headed by its chief, for personally contributing in reaching this agreement, stressing the continuation of this role at all stages,” Haniyeh’s office published.
Furthermore, Haniyeh stressed his movement’s full preparedness “to sincerely implement what was agreed upon, and to meet Egypt’s invitation to assess what steps will be implemented, as well as to meet the call for a comprehensive national dialogue.
Chief of the Egyptian intelligence “thanked Hamas’ leadership for its courageous position and wise guidance for its delegation to reach this agreement, stressing his country’s readiness to fulfill its role and continue ensuring the implementation of all of reconciliation’s steps in the future,” the statement said.
Fatah and Hamas signed on Thursday an official reconciliation agreement in Cairo under the sponsorship of Egyptian intelligence, ending the dialogues that started last Tuesday and included lengthy sessions.
The two rival movements ended the national split that lasted 10 consecutive years by signing the reconciliation agreement.
Egypt invited Palestinian factions that signed the reconciliation accord to hold a meeting in Cairo on November 21.
