The United Arab Emirates on Tuesday announced the creation of an economic and military partnership with Saudi Arabia that is separated from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), a platform that includes six Arab countries in the region: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman.

On Tuesday, the highly anticipated gathering of GCC foreign ministers summoned by Kuwait is opening in the country to attempt to mediate the ongoing crisis, that started in June, between Qatar on one side and Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the other.

The announcement of the creation by the UAE of a separate platform with Riyadh has been neither confirmed nor denied by Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, together with Bahrain and Egypt, accuse Qatar of ”sponsoring terrorism” over its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and its traditional closeness to Iran, a rival of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
