Actor Reginald E. Cathey, the much loved star has died at 59 after a battle of lung cancer according to reports.

Reg Cathey , the house of cards actor, also appeared in The Wire reportedly passed away at his home in New York, surrounded by friends and family.

In a statement, Netflix said: “We are heartbroken by the passing of our friend and House of Cards colleague Reg E. Cathey.

“Reg was the kindest man, the most giving actor, a true gentlemen. Our sympathy goes to his family.”

The Wire creator David Simon also paid tribute to the star, posting on Twitter to say: “Reg Cathey, 1958-2018. Not only a fine, masterful actor — but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set.

“On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing.”

 

 

Samuel L. Jackson wrote: “Shattered at the loss of Reg E. Cathey! Brilliant actor, humorist & friend! Irreplaceable! The ancestors about to be challenged!!”

House of Cards co-star Michael Kelly said: “There are words. Reg E Cathey was one of the kindest, funniest, talented badasses I have ever had the honor of knowing. We lost a really good man today. You will be missed brother.”

Luke Cage star Mike Colter wrote: “Go gentle into that good night my brother. It was an honor spending time with you on set.

“Getting to know you as a person and an artist. You will be missed. Condolences to your family. I salute you. #Reg E. Cathey.”

Cathey’s role as Freddy Hayes, owner of Francis Underwood’s favourite BBQ joint on House of Cards, earned him the Emmy for Outstanding Guest in 2015.

Cathey, who was known for his deep baritone voice, had early credits in hit movies including the Jim Carrey classic The Mask and thriller Seven with Brad Pitt.
