Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Saeb Erekat said that ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and creating an independent Palestinian state are prerequisites for defeating terrorism and achieving peace in the region.
During a meeting in Jericho with visiting lawmakers of the Conservative Party in the British House of Commons, Erekat said “defeating extremism and terrorism necessarily requires the overthrow of the Israeli occupation, settlements, and the collective [Israeli] punishments],” WAFA reported.
He reiterated the call for an international peacemaking conference on the basis of international law and the Arab Peace Initiative, but with mandatory mechanisms for implementation within specific timetables.
“It is not possible to continue the pattern of unilateral US patronage [of the peace process]… given its illegal decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,” the PLO Secretary General concluded.
