Seven Afghans, including three children, have drowned while trying to cross into Greece, a news report said on Tuesday.
More than a dozen people from the sinking boat, the Associated Press quoted from Turkey’s coast guard as saying. A rescue ship and helicopter found the fiber boat.
The boat — using an illegal route to the Greek island of Lesbos –capsized off western Canakkale province early Tuesday. Of the 20 people aboard, 13 were rescued and brought to Babakale port.
A human smuggler was among those rescued, the Coast Guard Command said in its statement. The smuggler was taken into custody.
Turkey has been the main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria. About 12,000 Afghan migrants were held in Turkey last year.
