According to reports, a fierce gunfight in a northwestern Pakistani tribal district killed six militants and two soldiers today. The district borders Afghanistan.
The clash took place in South Waziristan’s Spina Mela village where security forces acted on the presence of militants who had entered the area pretending to be returning displaced locals, a military statement said.
A most wanted militant called Nanakar was also killed in the clash, AFP reported.
The troops were able to seize weapons, ammunition and devices that the militants were carrying from across the border in Afghanistan, the military said.
Pakistan has long been accused of allowing the tribal areas to harbour militants fighting in Afghanistan — an allegation levelled against Islamabad by the US and repeatedly denied by Pakistan.
