A European Commission official in Jerusalem said yesterday that the European Union will continue providing financial support to the Palestinian Authority without any reduction.
“There is no decision regarding cutting European aid for the Palestinians ” said Shadi Othman, the European Union’s media and communications official in Jerusalem.
“The EU provides 350 million Euros annually to support the Palestinian government, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and various projects to support Palestinians in all areas, including Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip,” Othman said.
Israeli media reported last Thursday that “a European delegation arrived at the Palestinian territories in order to hold discussions to prevent families of martyrs, wounded, and prisoners from the right of having funds.
For the first time, the EU checks whether its financial support to the Palestinian Authority is used to pay salaries to the families of the wounded and the prisoners.
However, Othman denied the above claims saying that ” the aim of having various meetings with the two sides is to activate the European aid and make it more influential.”
